ZIGZAG
Zigzag refers to a line that bends in alternating inward and outward angles. The term was adopted into German at the end of the 17th century from the French zigzag (also sicsac) in the context of fortification construction (see also Zick-Zack-Graben). It was popularized through newspaper reports on the Siege of Landau in 1713. Subsequently, the initially narrow technical meaning was abandoned, and the term gradually became a general one.
